How to convert terabytes to tebibytes
One terabyte equals 0.909495 tebibytes, so multiply the number of terabytes by 0.909495:
TiB = TB × 0.909495
TB = TiB ÷ 0.909495 (1 TiB = 1.0995 TB)
Example: 0.5 TB → 0.5 × 0.909495 = 0.454747 TiB.
Going the other way, divide by 0.909495, or multiply by 1.0995.
Everyday values
| Terabytes | Tebibytes | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 TB | 0.454747 TiB | a 500 GB drive (465.66 GiB) |
| 1 TB | 0.909495 TiB | a 1 TB drive |
| 2 TB | 1.819 TiB | a 2 TB drive |
| 4 TB | 3.638 TiB | a 4 TB drive |
When you need this conversion
This explains the classic "missing space" puzzle. Drive makers use decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes), but Windows reports sizes in binary units while labelling them "GB" and "TB". A 1 TB drive therefore appears as about 931 GB (really 931 GiB, or 0.91 TiB). No space is missing; it is the same number of bytes counted differently.

About the units
- Terabyte (TB): 10¹² bytes (SI prefix).
- Tebibyte (TiB): 2⁴⁰ bytes (IEC binary prefix).
Both are units of digital storage. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
