How to convert pound-feet to newton metres
One pound-foot equals 1.3558 newton metres, so multiply the number of pound-feet by 1.3558:
N·m = lb·ft × 1.3558
lb·ft = N·m ÷ 1.3558 (1 N·m = 0.737562 lb·ft)
Example: 18 lb·ft → 18 × 1.3558 = 24.4047 N·m.
Going the other way, divide by 1.3558, or multiply by 0.737562; the newton metres to pound-feet converter does it for you.
Everyday values
| Pound-feet | Newton metres | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 18 lb·ft | 24.4047 N·m | a spark plug, roughly |
| 80 lb·ft | 108.465 N·m | a typical car wheel nut, roughly |
| 250 lb·ft | 338.954 N·m | a V8 engine |
| 400 lb·ft | 542.327 N·m | a high-torque engine |
When you need this conversion
American service manuals and torque wrenches often use pound-feet (also written ft-lb or lb-ft). Multiply by 1.356 to get newton metres. Note that "in-lb" (inch-pounds), used for small fasteners, is twelve times smaller than lb-ft.

About the units
- Pound-foot (lb·ft): 1 pound-force acting 1 foot from the axis, about 1.3558 N·m.
- Newton metre (N·m): the torque of 1 newton acting 1 metre from the axis.
Both are units of torque. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
