How to convert gigabits per second to megabits per second
One gigabit per second equals 1,000 megabits per second, so multiply the number of gigabits per second by 1,000:
Mbps = Gbps × 1,000
Gbps = Mbps ÷ 1,000 (1 Mbps = 0.001 Gbps)
Example: 2.5 Gbps → 2.5 × 1,000 = 2,500 Mbps.
Going the other way, divide by 1,000, or multiply by 0.001.
Everyday values
| Gigabits per second | Megabits per second | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Gbps | 1,000 Mbps | gigabit fibre or Ethernet |
| 2.5 Gbps | 2,500 Mbps | 2.5 GbE networking |
| 10 Gbps | 10,000 Mbps | 10-gigabit Ethernet |
When you need this conversion
One Gbps is 1,000 Mbps, or 125 MB/s. Gigabit Ethernet ports and fibre plans are rated this way; real file transfers over gigabit Ethernet typically reach about 110–118 MB/s.

About the units
- Gigabit per second (Gbps): 1,000 megabits per second.
- Megabit per second (Mbps): 1,000,000 bits per second, the unit internet plans are sold in.
Both are units of data transfer rate. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
Frequently asked questions
How many megabits per second are in one gigabit per second?
